For a third year in a row, Howard Alan Events is bringing the Other Art Festival on Walnut Street back to Shadyside.

Taking place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 20 and Sunday, April 21, the free, pet-friendly event features original, handcrafted artwork. Visitors strolling down Walnut Street will find more than 100 booths featuring a variety of art, as well as books, teas, candles, jewelry and glasswork.

“We really get the opportunity to showcase our contemporary and industrial artists when we go to Pittsburgh,” says Elizabeth Dashiell, publicist for HAE and American Crafts Endeavors. “There’s some fantastic charcoal artists. We have a fiber artist that specializes in these bespoke lampshades.”

The show also boasts a seasonal green market with specialty olive oils, dips, sauces and a tasting table. Dahiell says the collection will help to show the difference between what constitutes art and how craft is differentiated, giving the community an opportunity to appreciate the bigger picture of artistic work.

“It isn’t necessarily just about quality of art, because there’s fine craftsmanship out there that is truly artistic,” Dashiell says.

The event showcases carefully selected artists from around the country, among them local and visiting artists returning for another round.

“The beauty of our shows is that the artists are on site and you’re able to ask them not only about the process, but also the inspiration,” Dashiell says.

HAE, a Florida-based company and producer of other art shows around the country, looks at different cities that already have a built-in appreciation of the arts to host their shows, according to Dashiell.

“Pittsburgh is one of those places,” she says. “It worked out so well the past couple of years, so we’re bringing it back for a third.”

Dashiell says the springtime showcase features more local Pittsburgh artists than the Art Festival on Walnut Street, the annual HAE summer showcase returning for its 27th year in August.

“This kind of kicks off the outdoor festival season,” she says.
