An Epic Yard Sale is About to Take Place in The Mexican War Streets
The annual event featuring food trucks, live music — and lots of sales — attracts thousands of people to the North Side neighborhood.
Here’s an alert for thrifty yinzers — clear your Saturday for The Mexican War Streets Society’s annual yard sale.
Taking place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on June 8 in the North Side neighborhood, the event invites participants “to sell, hunt for treasure, and traverse the neighborhood.” Now in its ninth year, the epic yard sale brings the community together in a fun way, according to event organizer Danny Haas.
“[Originally, the yard sale] started out very small, in a very small dirt parking lot that we have here in the neighborhood,” he says. “I’ve been planning it for the past six years now, so I’ve been trying to grow it to be bigger and bigger every single year.”
Though pre-Covid attendance numbers were estimated at about 10,000 people, the event managed to attract between 4,000 and 5,000 attendees last year, Haas says.
The event’s headquarters will be set up at Allegheny General Hospital’s Sherman Avenue parking lot. More than 100 community members have signed up to participate in the sale, with most sellers opting to set up shop just outside their houses in driveways, garages and even gardens.
“It’s a really fun way to just walk around the entire neighborhood and look at the beautiful architecture and homes that we have here, as well as our community gardens and local businesses,” says Haas.
He adds that organizers will arm participants with both a digital map and a print version, so they’ll easily be able to find their way around the historical neighborhood.
Beyond the typical yard sale finds, attendees will have access to 12 food trucks, including PGH Crepes and Bruster’s Ice Cream, as well as dozens of other food vendors.
“The rest of that [vendor] number [consists of] crafters, as well as nonprofit groups representing the neighborhood and Pittsburgh in general,” says Haas.
The Northside YMCA, Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy and Highmark are all expected at the event; there also will be craft stations ranging from drink coasters to wreath-making.
Because the event is both family and dog-friendly, Haas recommends bringing water for pups and kids. There also will be live music and other festival attractions.
“Hang out with your neighbors, have fun, bring your friends and family, and just have a wonderful festival in the neighborhood,” Haas says.
