“Highrises Art Deco: 100 Spectacular Skyscrapers from the Roaring ’20s to the Great Depression”
Frequent PM contributor Mark Houser has published a beautiful extra-large coffee table book: “Highrises Art Deco: 100 Spectacular Skyscrapers from the Roaring ’20s to the Great Depression.” The book features drone photo compositions of landmarks from 49 cities across America, including Pittsburgh’s Cathedral of Learning, Koppers and Gulf buildings. Houser, the author of “MultiStories: 55 Antique Skyscrapers & the Business Tycoons Who Built Them,” fills the books with intriguing facts about the buildings’ architecture. ($100)
Spotted Lanternfly Ornament
Pittsburgh multidisciplinary artist Toby Atticus Fraley crafts yearly ornaments from momentous occasions in recent history. 2020 was the sinkhole bus, “nothing happened in 2021,” 2022 was the Jan. 1 meteor explosion, and this year is everyone’s favorite bug to squash: the spotted lanternfly. Note that delivery of the Spotted Lanternfly Ornament is not guaranteed by Christmas. ($30)
“Growing Up Yinzer: Memories from Beloved Pittsburghers”
How did growing up in Mt. Lebanon shape Mark Cuban’s drive and ambition to become a billionaire entrepreneur and media star? What three tenets from Bill Cowher’s father helped guide him through life as an NFL linebacker, Pittsburgh Steeler coach and now sports analyst? These first-person origin stories and those of 49 other current and former Pittsburghers — Jeff Goldblum, Suzie McConnell-Serio, Joe Namath, Antoine Fuqua, Billy Gardell, Donnie Iris and Patrice King Brown, to name a few — are part of “Growing Up Yinzer: Memories from Beloved Pittsburghers,” a book compiled by local communications specialist Dick Roberts. ($24.99)
412 Mug
Local ceramics studio Ton Pottery offers a number of beautiful handcrafted products, but the 412 mug is always a good gift choice. Dishwasher and microwave-safe, the 12-ounce mug comes in white and caramel with blue and purple undertones. ($35)
Pittsburgh Soaps
Pittsburgh Worsh has a great company name, great product names — and great handcrafted products. Purchase the “Polish Hill” – Pierogi Bath Bomb ($13-$16) or the Duquesne peppermint/rosemary/eucalyptus soap ($16) for a friend and the “Cookie Table” vanilla lady lock emulsified sugar scrub ($18-$22) for yourself.
Mamalux Lounge Dress
Shower any new moms (or experienced ones, they like to be comfy, too!) with Mamalux’s leak-proof lounge dress. Now in four colors, including the berry pictured here, the one-of-a-kind garment created by Pittsburgh mom Lindsay Stuart has pockets(!) and a washable bamboo fabric for style and function. ($78)
“She Devils at the Door”
“She Devils at the Door” tells the story of two sisters, Lucy and Eliza Kennedy, who came of age in high society in Pittsburgh’s Gilded Age but became pioneers in the local women’s suffrage movement and were ultimately responsible for exposing corruption in City Hall, leading to the conviction of Mayor Charles H. Kline in 1932. Written by local author and philanthropist Eliza Smith Brown, granddaughter of Eliza Kennedy Smith, the 360-page tome was scrupulously researched through the author’s family archives as well as public documents. ($29)
Striped Elves
No two of these hand-painted elves are alike — but they do all spread holiday cheer. Find them at Divertido in Etna before they report back to the North Pole. ($22.50)
Literary Candle
Pittsburgh-based North Avenue Candles has a candle for any genre of literature. We love their Banned Books collection — consider a Lavender + Lilac inspired by “The Color Purple” for anyone on your list. ($28)
Shower Steamer
Treat a friend (or yourself) to a Shower Steamer mix-pack from Lovett Sundries, a family-owned, zero-waste shop in Wilkinsburg. The mix pack contains six steamers crafted from a blend of essential oils in citrus, lavender rose and peppermint eucalyptus varieties. ($30)
Peppermint Almond Granola
Best Ever Granola has brought back a holiday favorite, peppermint almond granola, great for gifting or sharing at holiday gatherings. All products at Best Ever Granola are made gluten-free, vegan and packed with organic gluten-free rolled oats, and this variety, made with rich cacao and fresh peppermint, is sweetened only with pure Pennsylvania maple syrup. ($9)
Resin Wallet
Pick up a useful and “smart” wallet at the Carnegie Museum of Art gift shop. The Wooden Element Resin Smart Wallet comes in five colors and is made from stainless steel and natural burl wood that is sustainably obtained and sourced. ($64)
