David Roger’s Big Bugs + Pollinators Opens June 15 at Pittsburgh Botanic Garden
Something BIG is Coming to Pittsburgh Botanic Garden.
Pittsburgh Botanic Garden is ready for a really BIG summer as David Rogers’ Big Bugs + Pollinators arrives June 15!
David Rogers’ Big Bugs + Pollinators features sculptures that tower over 10 feet tall and showcases the huge role that these tiny creatures play in maintaining a balanced ecosystem. Put on your explorer cap and step into the mind of David Rogers as you check out the sculptures he has been creating for nearly 30 years.
David Rogers has been making things out of wood since his teenage years on Long Island, New York. He is mostly self-taught, with a background in ceramics, glassblowing, furniture making, boat restoration and wood restoration in Victorian homes. These forays into various modes of creation have ultimately pointed him toward his true fascination, making works of art from wood. In 1990, the very first Big Bug was created out of a bent maple sapling. Ever since, David has been adding to this series, and has even created a companion series he calls The Pollinators. In this summer’s iteration of David Rogers’ Big Bugs + Pollinators, selections from both series will be displayed as a reflection of some of the impactful insects and pollinators found in the Pittsburgh area.
During your visit, you will learn about the beneficial insects and animals represented in the sculptures, along with some of the fascinating native plants they support. David Rogers’ Big Bugs + Pollinators will be displayed throughout the entire garden, so get ready to experience Garden favorites like the Lotus Pond and Garden of the Five Senses like never before!
Throughout the summer, Pittsburgh Botanic Garden educators will be hosting regular drop-in programs in various garden areas to teach you about bugs, plants, pollination and more. Drop-in programs are family friendly and free with the price of daily admission.
Visits to David Rogers’ Big Bugs + Pollinators are included with the price of daily admission, which is always free for Pittsburgh Botanic Garden members. In addition to the exhibit, be sure to stop by Canopy Café for a delicious, fresh lunch and pick up some bug-themed merch and garden supplies in Forage & Finds!
