40 Under 40 FAQ

  • Who is eligible?Nominees must be 39 years of age or younger as of November 1, 2024, and live and work in the Greater Pittsburgh area.
  • Why should I nominate someone? This is a chance to honor a peer, a young mentor or someone you admire. It is also an opportunity to share an inspiring story of success with others. If you know someone who serves as an example to you, this is your chance to help share that person’s story with a larger audience. Yes, you may nominate yourself!
  • How are the 40 Under 40 honorees selected?
Each year, we receive hundreds of nominations. Honorees are selected based on the quality of the nomination submitted, NOT the quantity of nominations. Judges will be looking for details on the nominees’ professional accomplishments, demonstrated leadership and community contributions.

All nominations go through a pre-screening before being sent to the judging panel that is made up of community leaders, 40 Under 40 alumni and Pittsburgh Magazine staff.

After reviewing these nominations, the panel meets to present and debate the merits of the candidates until they reach a consensus on the top 40.

Those selected will be notified by Pittsburgh Magazine in August 2024 and the official list will be announced publicly in September 2024.

  • What makes a strong nomination? The best nominations demonstrate a nominee’s path to success, unique talents and achievements and community involvement. Use concrete examples to persuade the judges that the nominee has made a mark on the region. The best nominations are clear, short and complete, providing details that substantiate a nominee’s success.
  • What do judges look for?The judges look for specific examples from the nominee’s professional life and community involvement that demonstrate accomplishment and upward mobility. For example, “Chris opened five new stores and provided more than $60,000 in scholarship funds last year to local high school students” rather than “Chris grew the business into the best in the area and has helped many students go to college.”
