Pittsburgh Curiosities: Lincoln Highway Experience in Latrobe
Escape to a bygone era of lively car travel
As far as we’re aware, this is the only museum visit that comes with a complimentary slice of pie and cup of coffee. A visit to the Lincoln Highway Experience, a charming and informative attraction in Latrobe, will take guests back to the days when car travel was a more lively — if much slower — way of getting from place to place. Through a guided audio tour (included in your admission price), you’ll learn about roadside attractions such as the bygone Grand View Point Hotel, a ship-shaped wonder which sat landlocked above Bedford County and attracted Hollywood royalty, as well as more mundane aspects of early car travel such as motor lodges and diner cars. At the conclusion of the tour, you’ll pass from the century-old home that serves as the entrance to a newer wing of the attraction, which houses full structures such as a recreated gas station, a blaring neon motor-lodge sign and a restored 1938 diner. And yes, you’ll be invited in for a cup of joe and some homemade pie. As for how to get there, it would be inappropriate to take the Turnpike; get on Route 30 and enjoy the ride.
